Take the A Train was written by Billy Strayhorn, composed in 1939 after Duke Ellington invited Strayhorn to join his organization. Take the "A" Train is a jazz standard whose title refers to the New York City subway line that ran to Harlem, and it quickly became the signature tune of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. The piece has become one of the best-known jazz standards, recorded hundreds of times by Ellington and many other artists and frequently cited among the most important American songs of the 20th century.
