by Hurlstone
Bassoon Sonata - II. Ballade was written by William Yeates Hurlstone, in 1904 as the second movement of his Sonata in F major for bassoon and piano. The four-movement sonata, completed in July 1904 and dedicated to bassoonist Edward Dubrucq, places the Ballade (marked Moderato, ma sempre a piacere) as a lyrical G‑minor contrast to the opening Vivace and was first published in 1907. Although Hurlstone’s music remained little known for much of the twentieth century, the Bassoon Sonata, including its Ballade movement, has since become one of his most frequently performed works and appears in modern bassoon recital and examination repertoire.
