by Poulenc
Sonata for Flute and Piano, FP 164 - I. Allegretto malincolico was written by Francis Poulenc in 1957 as the first movement of his Sonate pour flûte et piano, FP 164. The three-movement flute sonata was commissioned by the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., dedicated to the memory of chamber-music patron Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, and publicly premiered by flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal with Poulenc at the piano at the Strasbourg Music Festival on 18 June 1957. The sonata quickly gained international success and is now considered one of the core works of the twentieth-century flute repertoire, often praised for its bittersweet lyricism and wit.
