The funk‑rock song is built around Flea’s driving bass line and Kiedis’s rapid‑fire vocals, with lyrics inspired by a former girlfriend who encouraged Kiedis to embrace generosity and letting go of material possessions. Give It Away became one of the band’s signature songs, winning a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal, topping the US Modern Rock chart and gaining heavy MTV rotation thanks to its distinctive desert‑set music video.
