Mad World was written by Roland Orzabal, written in 1982 for the debut Tears for Fears album The Hurting. Originally performed by Curt Smith and released as the band’s third single, the synth‑driven new wave track became Tears for Fears’ first international hit. The song later gained renewed fame through the 2001 Michael Andrews and Gary Jules cover used in the film Donnie Darko, which topped the UK Singles Chart and further cemented Mad World as a modern pop standard.
