Please note! The French horn in F is a fascinating instrument with a unique characteristic: it's a transposing instrument. Unlike concert pitch instruments such as the piano or the flute, where playing a C as indicated on the score produces a C to the ear, the French horn requires musicians to play a different note to hear the desired sound. For example, when a French horn plays a written C, the sound produced and heard is an F; therefore, the horn sounds a perfect fifth lower than the written note. You are in tune when you play a written E, see the note A displayed on the tuner, and the illuminated cursor shows a green colour as close as possible to value 0.

You are too low if the correct note is displayed but the colour is orange or red on the negative value side.

Start by playing your French horn for a few minutes to allow the instrument to reach a stable temperature.

3. Adjust the slides and mouthpiece

You can work with several elements of your instrument to adjust the sound of your French horn.

a) The main tuning slide: This is the most important. It's usually located at the beginning of the tube, just after the mouthpiece. Pulling or pushing it modifies the total length of the tube, which affects the overall tuning of the instrument.

b) The rotary valve tuning slides:

• Each valve has its own tuning slide
• These slides allow you to adjust the intonation of specific notes played with these valves
• They are particularly important for low notes

c) The mouthpiece branch tuning slide: This allows for fine intonation adjustments

d) The right hand in the bell:

• Crucial position for intonation
• Allows subtle adjustments while playing
• Can modify the pitch by up to a semitone
• Also used for "stopped" sounds

4. Work on your embouchure and air support:

In addition to adjusting the slides, work on your embouchure and air support to control intonation.
