Did you know? In this song, the phrase “Bring us some figgy pudding... we won’t go until we get some” refers to the treats Christmas carollers received for their performance. These singers were usually poor, so it was considered proper that they be suitably rewarded. And they were persistent! They only stopped singing once they had been duly paid by wealthy families. Today, it is more commonly heard performed by choirs at Christmas markets.

We invite you to discover Tomplay’s sheet music for We Wish You a Merry Christmas, available for solo accordion or with piano accompaniment synchronised with the score!

2. Pierpont – Jingle Bells

The lyrics celebrate the arrival of winter, the sound of ringing bells, and the magic of sleigh rides through snowy landscapes. 3. Gruber – Silent Night

The story takes place in 1818 in the Austrian Alps. On 23 December in Oberndorf, a village near Salzburg, where the Nativity was supposed to be re-enacted in the small church of St. Nicholas.

Unfortunately, the priest of St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf faced a disaster: the organ had been disabled by mice (others say rust) and it was impossible to repair it in time for the evening service.

Father Joseph Mohr, however, was not a man to give up: he rushed to fetch a poem he had written several years earlier entitled Stille Nacht (Silent Night).

He gave his poem to the schoolmaster and organist of the neighbouring town, Franz Xaver Gruber, and asked him to write a melody to accompany it on guitar.

A few hours later, the hymn was performed for the first time that evening during the Christmas Eve service in the small church of St. Nicholas.

With its gentle lyrics, this song offers a welcome moment of serenity during the busy festive season. Thanks to Tomplay’s sheet music for Silent Night, you can play solo or accompanied by an orchestra.
