Gospel is a genre of Christian music. The name derives from the Old English word 'godspell' meaning 'good news“, which is very appropriate because the lyrics of all the songs in this genre are mostly about the word of God. They are mainly based on Christian theological ideas and are brought to life by very dominant voices. Many gospel songs are inspired by hymns. The aim of gospel music is to encourage believers and to preach Christian beliefs.
The style is generally characterised by individual verses of hymns which are first sung to a larger audience, who then repeat the words or respond vocally with their own statements. This is then further developed with rhythmic clapping and stomping - resulting in an exceedingly lively, and cohesive, sound.
Nowadays, gospel music is not only performed in church, but also at concerts by famous Christian artists on tour. The genre has become a commercial success in recent years and many sub-genres have evolved, such as Christian country music and southern gospel music. This has led to a much richer and more diverse musical style. Some of the most famous gospel artists include Aretha Franklin and Mahalia Jackson.
Our Gospel sheet music is available in several levels of difficulty. Sing different arrangements of Gospel classics like Amazing Grace by John Newton, or more modern pieces like Oh Happy Day by Edwin Hawkins, accompanied by the orchestra.
