Serialism

Also known as twelve-tone music. A type of compositional technique created by Arnold Schoenberg in the 20th century. Instead of using major/minor scales (or modes), serialism uses a 'series' of notes, also called a tone row, as a basis for a composition. This means the music is in no specific key and all tones have equal importance.
