Schubert Sheet Music
About Schubert
The Austrian composer Franz Schubert (1797-1828) was born into a modest family but showed exceptional musical gifts from an early age. Despite a very short career due to his premature death at the age of 31, he left an impressive body of work including more than 600 lieder, symphonies, piano sonatas and chamber music. Schubert is particularly famous for his Lieder (songs for voice and piano), which he elevated to the status of a major art form. His ‘Winterreise’ lieder cycle is considered an absolute masterpiece of the genre. Although he was a contemporary of Beethoven in Vienna, Schubert developed his own style, distinguished by lyrical melodies and innovative harmony. He was influenced by German Romantic poetry, particularly that of Goethe, which inspired many of his lieder. Despite his talent, Schubert enjoyed little success during his lifetime and was often dependent on the support of his friends. The String Quintet in C major D. 956, one of his last works, composed two months before his death, is considered a pinnacle of chamber music. Despite his all-too-brief career, Schubert's influence on the development of Romantic music was profound and lasting.
