When we think of movies, Hollywood and Disney often come to mind. However, in recent years Japanese animation films have skyrocketed in popularity and there are some real masterpieces in this genre. The storylines, visuals and music all contribute to the success of this style.
The very first anime song appeared in the 1963 anime TV series Astro Boy: the opening theme was titled Atom March and was performed by a boys’ choir. In the 1970s, anime music came into its own with artists specifically recording anime music and performing it at concerts. Anime music became a genre in its own right. Nowadays, anime music is popular with both children and adults thanks to the darker issues covered in many famous anime films and series, as well as the development of the internet.
One of the most famous anime composers is Joe Hisaishi. His unique musical style has graced the scenes of many anime films, notably those directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki. Together, this iconic duo have changed the way a whole generation views Japanese animation.
