The tango is a dance which originated in the Río de la Plata region in the 1880s. It is known for being a passionate and sensual dance between two people. In 1915, it became very popular abroad, especially in Europe, and in 2009 it was included in the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The first pieces of tango music written by known composers date back to 1910. Tango music is usually in duple metre and often performed on a solo instrument or small ensemble. The most common solo instrument used is the guitar and for ensemble instruments, it can include the flute, double bass and bandoneón. The bandoneón is a large instrument, similar to an accordion, which is typically used in tango music. It is symbolic of this style of music.
A famous composer in this genre was Astor Piazzolla, a 20th century Argentinian who revolutionised the traditional tango. His significant influence on the style included the development of the nuevo tango (‘new tango’), a departure from the traditional tango with the addition of jazz and classical influences.
