About Verdi
The Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) established himself as one of the greatest opera composers of all time. After his debut with ‘Nabucco’ (1842), he revolutionised Italian opera with a succession of masterpieces. His unique style combines intense drama, unforgettable arias and perfect mastery of the voice. Verdi drew his inspiration from Italian bel canto, French grand opera and the dramas of Shakespeare. His collaboration with librettists Arrigo Boito and Francesco Maria Piave gave birth to masterpieces such as ‘Otello’ and ‘Falstaff’. Although best known for his operas, Verdi also composed his remarkable Requiem and various sacred works. His influence on opera is immense, with works such as ‘La Traviata’, ‘Rigoletto’ and ‘Aida’ still among the most performed in the world. Verdi never ceased to evolve throughout his career, creating operas of increasing psychological complexity. Verdi's music has enchanted all generations, testifying to his musical genius and his deep understanding of human nature.
