Frank Sinatra's smooth voice comes to mind when we think of "Fly Me to the Moon". However, this song, written by Bart Howard (and inspired by Cole Porter) in 1954, has been performed by many other artists, notably by Peggy Lee in 1960.

The originator of soul music, Ray Charles made a profound mark on American music, taking his inspiration from Jazz, Country and Rhythm and Blues.

“Hit the Road Jack” is a song written by Percy Mayfield and recorded for the first time by Ray Charles. It’s one of his most well-known songs.

It tells the story of a rather comical discussion between a woman and her husband, the wife telling him to clear out while the husband tries to convince her to keep him by her side! This song is dedicated to the writer Jack Kerouac and his book On the Road.

3. Autumn Leaves - Joseph Kosma

"Les Feuilles mortes" is a French popular song and Jazz standard composed by Joseph Kosma to original French lyrics by Jacques Prévert, then to Johnny Mercer's English version "Autumn Leaves".

Kosma, who originated from Hungary, had been introduced to Prévert in Paris. They collaborated on this song for a ballet called Le Rendez-Vous and, in 1946, it was used in the film Les Portes de la nuit. Many artists have covered it over the years, such as Yves Montand, whose name is eternally linked with the song.

4. Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty

The famous Soft Rock song by Gerry Rafferty, "Baker Street", evokes a man's dream of having a home. He drinks to forget that he doesn't have one without realizing that he's wandering around aimlessly. The inspiration for the song's title comes from the road of the same name in London.

There is an urban legend which tells that the saxophone solo was recorded by Bob Holness, an English television quiz show host. However, it was played by Raphael Ravenscroft, an English composer and saxophonist.

5. Blue Train - John Coltrane

The music of saxophonist John Coltrane has left an indelible mark on Jazz and everyone agrees that Blue Train, released in 1957, is the most remarkable of his albums. Its name comes from the first track.

In the piece "Blue Train", the trumpet introduction, joined by the trombone and quickly followed by Coltrane's Jazz lines on the saxophone, make this piece a real masterpiece.

6. All of Me - Marks and Simons

Written by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons, “All of Me” is one of Jazz’s greatest hits, performed by many stars such as Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra.

The song was first performed by the American singer and actress Belle Baker, whose husband had just passed away. It is said that the singer broke down in tears in the middle of her performance. Her emotional rendition was picked up by the press, which helped make the song a hit.

7. Feeling Good - Michael Bublé

Originally written for a stage musical in 1964, "Feeling Good" was made famous by Nina Simone, who recorded in 1965 for her album I Put a Spell on You. The title has since appeared in many films, TV series and advertisements.

"Feeling Good" has been covered a great deal, particularly by Michael Bublé, Lauryn Hill, George Michael, John Coltrane and even the rock group Muse.

8. Caravan - Duke Ellington

"Caravan" by Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington was released for the first time in December 1936 and reached the fourth spot in the Pop charts in June 1937.

The main theme in the minor melody created for this piece has made it an unmissable, evocative and lively standard, enhanced by Ellington's arrangement.  It can be heard in particular throughout the excellent feature film Whiplash by Damien Chazelle.
