Singer, composer, and producer, George Michael was a true musical icon who is one of the most important artists of his generation. As part of the duo Wham!, he released timeless hits like Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go and Last Christmas, one of the most famous Christmas tunes.
He also succeeded in his solo career with his first single, Careless Whisper, a classic 80s tune. The soulful lyrics about love and guilt struck a chord with fans and critics alike. The iconic saxophone part, played by English jazz saxophonist Steve Gregory, makes this song instantly recognisable. You could say that the melody is one of the most recognisable saxophone melodies of all time.
Careless Whisper is a great example of George Michael’s exceptional song writing skills: since its release, the hit has been covered many times across a variety of genres - from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to the punk version by The Gossip and the hip-hop cover by none other than Tupac. This proves that George Michael’s music is not only timeless but spans across different genres.
