Joseph Kosma Sheet Music
About Joseph Kosma
The naturalised Hungarian composer Joseph Kosma (1905-1969) was born into a family of musicians in Budapest. He studied composition at the Budapest Conservatory before moving to Paris in 1933, fleeing the rise of Nazism. Throughout his career, Kosma composed for film, theatre and song, drawing inspiration from both the classical tradition and popular music. Inspired by various artists of his time, in particular the poet Jacques Prévert, he also worked with renowned directors such as Jean Renoir, helping to shape the soundtrack of French cinema. Although best known for his songs and film scores, Kosma has always maintained a link with contemporary classical music. He left a considerable mark on French chanson with songs such as ‘Les Feuilles mortes’, which have become international standards. Kosma continued to compose for a variety of media right up to the end of his life. One of his last works, the music for Jean Cocteau's film ‘Le Testament d'Orphée’ in 1960, illustrates his talent for creating unique musical atmospheres. Joseph Kosma's compositions continue to be performed and adapted by artists all over the world, testifying to the universality and permanence of his art.
