About Duke Ellington
The American jazz composer and pianist Duke Ellington (1899-1974) was born in Washington D.C. into a middle-class family. He began playing the piano in the clubs of his home town. His exceptional talent and unique style soon propelled him to the top of the jazz scene. He went on to become a renowned composer and conductor, leading his orchestra for over 50 years. He composed thousands of pieces, covering a wide range of jazz styles from jungle music to swing and bebop. His most famous works include ‘Take the “A” Train’, ‘Mood Indigo’ and ‘It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)’. Ellington collaborated with many renowned musicians, including Billy Strayhorn, his musical alter ego. His sophisticated style and orchestral approach to jazz elevated it to the status of a major art form. Although best known for his jazz music, Ellington also composed symphonic suites and sacred works. Right up to the end of his career, he continued to innovate and explore new musical forms, as illustrated by ‘The New Orleans Suite’ composed in 1970. Duke Ellington's artistic legacy on jazz and American music in general is immeasurable and continues to inspire generations of musicians.
