by Eva Cassidy
Over the Rainbow was written by Harold Arlen, with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, written in 1938–1939 for the MGM film The Wizard of Oz. The ballad is sung on screen by Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale and expresses the character’s longing to escape her troubles for a better world "over the rainbow". "Over the Rainbow" won the 1939 Academy Award for Best Original Song and has since become a Great American Songbook standard, recorded by countless artists including Eva Cassidy, whose acclaimed late‑1990s cover brought the song renewed attention.
