About Nirvana
Formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987, Nirvana revolutionised 90s rock music with their grunge style. Led by Kurt Cobain, with Dave Grohl on drums and Krist Novoselic on bass, the band propelled alternative rock into the mainstream with ‘Nevermind’ (1991). Nirvana blend punk rock, heavy metal and melodic pop with introspective and often cryptic lyrics. The band drew inspiration from hardcore punk, 80s indie rock and the Pixies. Nirvana's collaboration with producer Butch Vig was the inspiration for ‘Nevermind’. Although often associated with the Seattle grunge movement, their music goes far beyond this. Their influence on rock is immense, with songs like ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ becoming generational anthems. Cobain's tragic death in 1994 put an end to the band, but their legacy lives on as a testament to their ability to combine pop accessibility with underground authenticity.
