Dave Brubeck Sheet Music
About Dave Brubeck
American jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck was born in 1920 on a ranch in California. After classical training, he discovered jazz during his university studies. He narrowly missed being expelled from the Conservatory because of his difficulty in reading a score, but his talent for improvisation and his determination were enough to open the doors to a remarkable career. Brubeck became one of the pioneers of cool jazz and helped popularise jazz for a wide audience in the 1950s and 1960s. He composed with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, notably for the album ‘Time Out’, which included the famous track ‘Take Five’. His unique style is characterised by the use of unusual meters and complex rhythms, influenced by his various musical experiences on world tours. Brubeck collaborated with many renowned musicians, including saxophonist Paul Desmond. As well as jazz, he also wrote classical and sacred works later in his career. One of his last works, the oratorio ‘The Gates of Justice’ (1969), blends elements of jazz, classical music and Afro-American spirituals. Dave Brubeck helped open up new avenues of rhythmic and harmonic exploration in jazz, and his work occupies a pre-podern place on the 20th-century music scene. He died in 2012 at the age of 91.
