Cherubini Sheet Music
About Cherubini
Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842) was a precociously talented Italian composer who wrote his first work at the age of 13. Despite his modest beginnings, he quickly gained notoriety for his operas and sacred music. Cherubini spent most of his career in Paris, where he survived the upheavals of the French Revolution before becoming an important figure in musical life under Napoleon and the Restoration. He composed in a variety of genres, but is particularly renowned for his operas. His style evolved over time, moving from the light Italian style of his early works to a more dramatic style, as exemplified by his opera ‘Médée’. Cherubini was also an influential teacher, becoming director of the Paris Conservatoire where he trained many musicians. Despite great success during his lifetime, his music fell into oblivion after his death, before being rediscovered in the 20th century. One of his last major works, the Requiem in C minor composed in 1816, is a masterpiece of sacred music. Cherubini is now recognised as an important bridge between the Classical and Romantic periods, having influenced such prestigious composers as Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms.
