Grieg Sheet Music
About Grieg
The Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg (1843-1907), born into a merchant family in Bergen, revealed a precocious musical talent, encouraged by his pianist mother. His unique style, which fused Norwegian folk music with European classical traditions, made him a major figure in Nordic Romanticism. Grieg is known for his evocative works that capture the essence of Norwegian landscapes and folklore, including his incidental music for ‘Peer Gynt’ and his Piano Concerto in A minor. His style is characterised by lyrical melodies, colourful harmonies and an inventive use of Norwegian folk songs and dances. Grieg collaborated with many artists of his time and influenced generations of Nordic composers. Although best known for his orchestral and piano works, he also excelled at composing lieder and chamber music. One of his last significant works, the ‘Slåtter’ (Norwegian Peasant Dances) Op. 72, demonstrates his ability to integrate folk music into a sophisticated musical language. Grieg's importance to the development of Norwegian national music and to late Romanticism in general remains considerable, and his works continue to be widely performed and appreciated throughout the world.
