American musician Stevie Wonder, who was born prematurely and became blind shortly afterwards, revealed an exceptional musical gift from an early age. Signed to Motown Records at just 11, he quickly developed his skills in singing, composing and playing multiple instruments. Throughout his career, Wonder has explored a variety of genres, from R&B and funk to pop and jazz. He discovered gospel music at a very early age in his church, and this had a profound effect on his vocal style. He has also collaborated with many famous artists, including Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. Although often associated with the soul music of the 70s, Wonder constantly innovated, incorporating synthesizers and electronic rhythms into his music. His influence on popular music, with albums such as ‘Songs in the Key of Life’, is enormous. Later in his career, he continued to compose while engaging in social causes. His recent duet with Ariana Grande, ‘Faith’, illustrates his talent for creating catchy pop hits.
