by Betty Wright
Tonight Is the Night was written by Betty Wright, Willie Clarke, Clarence Reid, written by Miami soul singer Betty Wright with writers Willie Clarke and Clarence Reid and released as a single in 1974. The song is a slow, confessional soul ballad in which a young woman candidly recounts losing her virginity with an older lover, over a sparse, intimate arrangement. Tonight Is the Night became one of Wright’s signature songs, a notable R&B hit in the mid‑1970s and later revisited in an extended live version that received significant radio play.
