by Jacques Brel
Amsterdam was written by Jacques Brel, written in 1963–1964 and first released in October 1964 in a live performance from the Olympia in Paris. Amsterdam is a dramatic chanson for voice and orchestra portraying the rough, sensual life of sailors in the port of Amsterdam, and Brel chose to record and issue it only in its live version from his Olympia concerts. The song became one of Brel’s most celebrated works and has been widely covered and adapted, notably in English by artists such as Scott Walker and David Bowie, helping to secure its status as a classic of the chanson repertoire.
