Layla was written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon, written by guitarist Eric Clapton and drummer Jim Gordon and first released in 1970 on Derek and the Dominos’ album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. Layla is a rock song in two contrasting sections, inspired by Clapton’s unrequited love for Pattie Boyd and featuring a famous piano coda developed from Gordon’s melody. Although not a major hit on initial release, it later became one of Clapton’s signature songs, with both the original and the 1992 acoustic version receiving extensive radio play and critical acclaim.
