by Paul Desmond
Take Five was written by Paul Desmond, in 1959 for the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s album Time Out. Take Five is a jazz piece in 5/4 time whose melody was written by alto saxophonist Paul Desmond and arranged collaboratively within the quartet, featuring a prominent drum solo by Joe Morello. Released as a single, it became a sleeper hit in the early 1960s and is widely cited as the first jazz single to sell over a million copies, turning Take Five into a standard and a landmark of cool jazz.
