The Great Pretender was written by Buck Ram, written in 1955 and first recorded by the Platters for release as a single in November that year. The song is a doo‑wop ballad whose lyrics about emotional facades were crafted by Ram, the Platters’ manager and a seasoned songwriter, reportedly composed quickly as a follow‑up to their hit "Only You (And You Alone)". It topped the Billboard R&B chart and reached the pop top ten, became one of the Platters’ signature songs, and has been widely covered since, including Freddie Mercury’s noted 1987 version.
