by Handy
Memphis Blues was written by W. C. Handy, first published as an instrumental in 1912. The piece, originally titled Mister Crump, was written for a Memphis mayoral campaign and later reworked and issued as The Memphis Blues. It is widely regarded as one of the first published blues compositions and helped establish Handy’s reputation as a pioneering American popular composer.
