by Billy Hayes
Blue Christmas was written by Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson, around 1948 as a country-style Christmas song. Blue Christmas was first recorded by Doye O’Dell in 1948 and soon popularized in country music by Ernest Tubb, before achieving iconic status through Elvis Presley’s 1957 recording. Presley’s version became a perennial holiday favorite, and the song has since been widely covered and is now considered a Christmas standard across country, pop and rock repertoires.
