by Miles Davis
Four was written by Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, around 1954 and first recorded that year by the Miles Davis Quartet. Four is a jazz standard originally credited to trumpeter Miles Davis but later widely accepted by scholars and discographers as having been composed by alto saxophonist Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson. Since its first appearance on Davis’s 1954 recordings, Four has become a core bebop and post‑bop tune, frequently recorded and performed by jazz musicians and widely used in jazz education.
