by Parry
Jerusalem was written by Hubert Parry, in 1916 as a choral song setting of William Blake’s poem “And did those feet in ancient time”. Commonly known as “Jerusalem”, Parry’s setting was written at the request of Poet Laureate Robert Bridges during the First World War and first performed at a Fight for Right rally at London’s Queen’s Hall. The hymn quickly became one of England’s best‑loved patriotic songs and is now widely sung at national occasions, sporting events and church services, often considered an unofficial national anthem.
