by Williams
Songs of Travel – I. The Vagabond was written by Ralph Vaughan Williams, between about 1901 and 1904 as the opening song of his cycle Songs of Travel. The Vagabond sets a poem from Robert Louis Stevenson’s collection Songs of Travel and Other Verses for baritone and piano, introducing the restless wanderer who is the central figure of the cycle and employing march‑like piano writing to evoke his journey. Songs of Travel is regarded as Vaughan Williams’s first major song cycle and The Vagabond has become one of his best‑known English art songs, regularly performed by baritones in recital and widely recorded.
