Fauré Sheet Music
About Fauré
The French composer Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), born into a modest family in the south of France, revealed a precocious musical talent that led him to study at the École Niedermeyer in Paris. Despite a difficult start as an organist and teacher, his exceptional talent for composition gradually brought him to the forefront of the French musical scene. Fauré is known for his unique style, which bridged the gap between late Romanticism and early Modernism, profoundly influencing French music in the early 20th century. He excelled in a variety of genres, including chamber music, the composition of fine melodies and piano composition. His most famous works include his ‘Requiem’, the suite ‘Pelléas et Mélisande’ and numerous melodies such as ‘Après un rêve’. Fauré's style is characterised by subtle and innovative harmonies, elegant melodies and profound expressiveness. He influenced many composers, including his pupils Maurice Ravel and Nadia Boulanger. Although best known for his chamber music and melodies, Fauré also composed orchestral works and an opera. One of his last major works, the song cycle ‘L'horizon chimérique’ (1921), composed when he was almost completely deaf, bears witness to the depth of his musical expression right up to the end of his life. Fauré's influence on the development of French music and harmony in the early 20th century remains considerable, and his works continue to be widely performed and studied today.
