Gershwin Sheet Music
About Gershwin
Born into a Jewish immigrant family in New York, American composer George Gershwin (1898-1937) began his career as a demonstration pianist for a sheet music dealer. Despite his lack of academic musical training, he went on to become one of the most brilliant composers of the 20th century, brilliantly combining classical music and jazz. Gershwin began by writing popular songs with his lyricist brother Ira, producing many Great American Songbook standards such as ‘I Got Rhythm’ and ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’. He then turned to concert music, composing such legendary works as ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ and the opera ‘Porgy and Bess’. His unique writing fused the syncopated rhythms of jazz with the harmonic structures of European classical music, creating a typically American style. Gershwin collaborated with many of the celebrities of his day, including Fred Astaire and Ethel Merman. Although his career was tragically cut short by his death at the age of 38, his influence on American music is marked and lasting. One of his last major works, the Piano Concerto in F, illustrates his growing mastery of classical form while retaining a jazzy style all his own. Gershwin's legacy continues to inspire musicians of all genres, and his works remain among the most performed and appreciated in the American repertoire.
