Joplin Sheet Music
About Joplin
Scott Joplin (1868-1917), also known as the ‘King of Ragtime’, was one of the most influential American composers of his time. His career culminated in works such as ‘The Entertainer’ (1902) and his opera ‘Treemonisha’ (1911). His unique style elevated ragtime to an art form in its own right, combining syncopated Afro-American rhythms with classical European structures. Joplin was inspired by classical music, spirituals and popular dances. His collaboration with publisher John Stark enabled his works to be widely distributed. Although primarily famous for his rags, Scott Joplin aspired to be recognised as a composer in all genres. His influence on American music is fundamental, laying the foundations for jazz and modern popular music. Although he died in poverty in 1917, he received considerable posthumous recognition, thanks in particular to the film ‘L'Arnaque’ (1973), which popularised ‘The Entertainer’. His music continues to be performed and studied, testifying to his major contribution to American music.
