Telemann Sheet Music
About Telemann
The German Baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) was born into a family of pastors and lawyers. Despite his father's misgivings, he chose to devote himself to his passion for music. Largely self-taught, he learned to play numerous instruments and compose from an early age. Throughout his prolific career, he wrote operas, cantatas, concertos, chamber music and orchestral works. Telemann was influenced by various European musical styles. His travels in France, for example, led him to incorporate elements of French music into his compositions. He also maintained correspondence with illustrious musicians of his time, including Johann Sebastian Bach and Handel. Although considered a Baroque composer, Telemann often anticipated the galant style that was to follow, which explains the popularity of his music during his lifetime. Towards the end of his life, Telemann continued to innovate, incorporating elements of popular music into his works. One of his last major compositions is the St Matthew Passion of 1746, which demonstrates his mastery of the Baroque style. Telemann's works are still performed and enjoyed today, offering musicians and audiences alike a fascinating illustration of the richness of Baroque music.
