About Vivaldi
Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi, born in Venice in 1678, enjoyed a multi-faceted career as a priest, virtuoso violinist and prolific composer. Nicknamed ‘the red-headed priest’ because of his hair, he spent much of his life teaching music at the Ospedale della Pietà, an orphanage for girls. It was there that he composed most of his concertos and sacred music. Vivaldi is best known for his concertos, including the famous ‘The Four Seasons’, a set of four violin concertos illustrating the seasons of the year. He developed the concerto form considerably, influencing composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach. In addition to his concertos, Vivaldi composed numerous operas, although few of them are still performed today. His style, characterised by expressive melodies and lively rhythms, is emblematic of the Baroque period. Despite his fame in Italy and throughout Europe during his lifetime, Vivaldi fell into oblivion after his death and was not rediscovered until the early 20th century. Among his most famous works, the ‘Gloria’ RV 589 is a brilliant example of sacred music and embodies the quintessence of the Baroque choral repertoire. Vivaldi's importance to the development of the concerto and his influence on Baroque music make him one of the most important composers of his time.
