Afro Blue was written by Mongo Santamaría, in 1959. Afro Blue is a jazz composition by Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaría that blends an Afro‑Cuban rhythmic foundation with a memorable, chant‑like melody and was first recorded with the Cal Tjader Sextet. The piece quickly became a jazz standard, notably through John Coltrane’s influential 1963 recordings, and has since been interpreted by many major artists across Latin jazz and modern jazz.
