Cry Me a River was written by Arthur Hamilton, written and first published in 1953 as a torch song. Cry Me a River is a bluesy jazz ballad originally intended for a film and became widely known through Julie London’s sultry 1955 recording. The song has since become a jazz standard recorded by many singers, with London’s version inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001 and Ella Fitzgerald’s interpretation also widely admired.
